A Closer Look At Charlotte Strength
Most gyms in a city this size compete on equipment or price. Charlotte Strength competes on coaching credentials, and it is not a close contest.
The gym sits on Anderson Street on Charlotte’s east side, near Villa Heights and the NoDa corridor. It serves as the home floor for Heavy Metal Barbell Club, an Olympic weightlifting program with national and international reach.
Members come from NoDa, Plaza Midwood, Belmont, Elizabeth, Uptown, and South End. Some drive in from Concord and Huntersville. The draw is the coaching roster rather than convenience.
Coaching Philosophy
The stated position is direct: no quick fixes, no gimmicks. The gym builds habits and systems meant to hold up over years. Technique gets taught properly before load goes up.
The strength and conditioning track runs on a program the coaches call P.I.L.A.R., short for progressive, intentional, long-term lifting and resilience. It covers foundational barbell patterns, multi-planar work like sprinting and rotation, and monthly bodyweight skill progressions. Saturdays bring a task-based strongman session.
Classes run about an hour. Each includes a warm-up, movement instruction, demonstration, and coaching on form throughout the working sets. Nobody is left to figure it out alone.
Member Journey
New lifters typically start with Barbell Basics. That onboarding block teaches Olympic lifting fundamentals and general strength work from the ground up. It exists so beginners are not thrown straight into advanced programming.
From there, paths diverge by goal. Competitive weightlifters move into the barbell club. Members chasing conditioning join NoDa Fit, the gym’s HYROX-oriented group training program. Others stay with general strength and conditioning or work one-on-one.
Round-the-clock access means members can train outside class times. That flexibility matters for people fitting sessions around shift work or family schedules.
Leadership And Staff
The coaching staff at Charlotte Strength is unusually deep. Club Director Tayler Harris is a two-time Masters World Champion and world record holder. She has represented Team USA, served on the USAW board, and led the Carolina state weightlifting organization.
National Team Coach Seán Rigsby is a USAW International Coach and NSCA CSCS. He competed for Ireland and has served as head coach of the Jamaican weightlifting team. Youth team coaching falls to Caine Wilkes, a 2020 Tokyo Olympian and six-time national champion.
Fitness Director Chris Yandle runs NoDa Fit with CrossFit Level 2 and HYROX certifications. The rest of the staff carries USAW credentials, graduate degrees in exercise science, and national medals of their own.
Who This Gym Serves
Competitive weightlifters get the clearest fit. The remote coaching roster alone includes Team USA members, USAW national medalists, a Masters World Champion, and CrossFit Games competitors.
The gym is not only for competitors, though. Adults new to barbell training start here regularly through the onboarding program. Youth athletes have a dedicated team. Members focused on general fitness use group conditioning without ever touching a competition platform.
For anyone in Charlotte who wants to learn lifting from coaches at the top of the sport, Charlotte Strength is a rare option in the region.
