Southeast Raleigh YMCA

A community-focused 32-acre campus in Raleigh, NC, combining a state-of-the-art YMCA wellness facility, full gym, group fitness studios, indoor track, and outdoor pool with a public elementary school, housing, and youth programs.

Why Southeast Raleigh YMCA Shares a Campus With a School

Southeast Raleigh YMCA is a full-service community YMCA on Rock Quarry Road in southeast Raleigh, North Carolina. The branch opened in August 2019 on the same campus as Southeast Raleigh Elementary School. That pairing was the first public-private partnership of its kind in the state. YMCA of the Triangle built it with Wake County Public Schools and the nonprofit Southeast Raleigh Promise. That nonprofit acted as the community’s convener. The goal was one site holding school, fitness, housing and food access within a short walk.

The Wellness Floor, Gym and Outdoor Pools on Rock Quarry Road

The branch runs a wide wellness floor of cardio and strength equipment alongside three fitness studios. A full-size gymnasium handles basketball and youth leagues, and an indoor track circles above the floor. Outdoors, a six-lane heated pool with a water slide serves lap swimmers, lessons and families in season. An instructional kitchen and garden space support nutrition programming that most gyms have no room for. Kid Zone childcare lets parents train while their children stay on site.

Swim Lessons, Youth Sports and After-School Programs in Raleigh

Programming here reaches well past adult group fitness. Club ROAR provides after-school support for elementary students, and before and after-school care runs through the school year. Swim instruction is a central piece, delivered both to members and to students from the school next door. Youth sports leagues and sports camps fill the gym and fields across the calendar. Adult classes cover cycling, yoga and strength training for members working around jobs and family.

What Has the Y Meant for Southeast Raleigh?

The branch reports concrete numbers from its first five years. More than 1,600 people learned to swim, including over 800 elementary students. Club ROAR supported more than 500 students. The site distributed 714,144 healthy meals to 23,627 people. The branch also served as an early voting location for 18,360 voters across 2022 and 2024. More than 100 events there have drawn over 10,000 attendees.

Who Uses the Southeast Raleigh YMCA?

Members here span more of the age range than a typical fitness studio. Families join for the pool, the gym and childcare during workouts. Older adults use the indoor track and lower-impact classes. Students walk over from the elementary school for lessons and after-school hours. Neighbors in the surrounding census tracts can join through the Neighbor Zone program. The Y built that program with Southeast Raleigh Promise and Wake County schools for the immediate community.

Southeast Raleigh YMCA and the Rock Quarry Road Corridor

Southeast Raleigh YMCA anchors a 32-acre site meant to change the corridor around it. The Beacon Ridge development next door added 120 affordable housing units, fully occupied. The Y has partnered with more than 50 minority-owned businesses and directed over $1.1 million in support to them. Leadership describes the site as a blueprint for building with a community rather than for it. Members describe something simpler: a busy, mixed room where the classes and the people both vary.
