Alexander Family YMCA

The Alexander Family YMCA on Hillsborough Street in Raleigh, NC is a three-story facility featuring state-of-the-art wellness floors, an indoor pool, group fitness studios, basketball courts, and youth programs in a welcoming community setting.

Raleigh’s Hillsborough Street Y: the Alexander Family YMCA

The Alexander Family YMCA is a full-service community YMCA at 1603 Hillsborough Street in Raleigh, North Carolina. The branch sits on the corridor between downtown and North Carolina State University, within walking distance of both. Three floors hold fitness space, courts, studios and an indoor pool under one roof. As part of YMCA of the Triangle, the branch operates as a nonprofit rather than a commercial gym.

Courts, Pool and Indoor Track Inside a Three-Story Branch

The building packs more recreation into an urban lot than most gyms attempt. A six-lane indoor pool handles lap swimming, lessons and family swim. The gymnasium runs basketball, and three racquetball courts and indoor pickleball courts keep the racquet crowd busy. An indoor track circles the upper level for members who would rather walk than use a treadmill. Strength equipment, free weights and kettlebells fill the wellness floor, with three studios for classes.

Group Fitness, Swim Lessons and Racquet Sports in Raleigh

Programming runs deep enough that most members never see the whole schedule. Group fitness covers yoga, Zumba, cycling and strength formats across the week. Aquatics reaches from beginner swim lessons through team swimming and lifeguard certification. Adult water polo and pickup racquet games fill hours a standard studio would leave empty. Personal training is available, and members can start with a fitness consultation before choosing a plan. Youth sports leagues in soccer and basketball run alongside the adult schedule.

The Alexander Jones Wright Youth Center Next Door

Youth programming outgrew the main building, so the Y built beside it. The Alexander Jones Wright YMCA Youth Center broke ground in October 2024 as a 10,000-square-foot annex. Its design carries indoor and outdoor space, academic help areas and rooms for after-school, day camp and teen leadership work. The name honors Pearl Alexander, Earl Jones and Willie Wright. Those three staff members gave more than 130 combined years of service. Private donations, state funds and federal grants covered the $8.5 million cost.

Who Belongs to This YMCA Near NC State?

Membership here reflects the mix of the neighborhood around it. Students and university staff walk over from campus. Downtown workers use the pool and track before or after the office. Families rely on before-school care, after-school programs and Parents Night Out evenings. Older adults come for the water, the track and lower-impact classes. Drop-in Kid Zone childcare lets parents train while their children stay in the building. Financial assistance keeps membership within reach for households that need it.

The Alexander Family YMCA and the Hillsborough Street Corridor

The Alexander Family YMCA has been a fixture of Hillsborough Street’s daily rhythm for decades. Its presence keeps a recreation anchor on a corridor otherwise built around restaurants, shops and student housing. Outreach programs and seasonal drives extend the branch’s work past its own members. Renovations have expanded the fitness floor and added studio space without closing the doors. Members most often describe the staff, saying the people there feel less like employees and more like family.
